I di dn’t know, for example, that it coul d do terri bl e dam age to your heart and l ungs or that i t was m ore diffi cul t for sm oki ng coupl es to be e pregnant. I certai nly di dn’t know thei r babi es m ay have a smal er bi rth wei ght or even be abnorm al i n some way. Neither di d I know that m y ci garete sm oke coul d affect the health of knownsm okers. H owever, what I di d know was that m y girlfri end thought I sm el t terri bl e. She sai d m y breath and clothes sm el t, and that the ends of my fingers were turni ng yel ow. She told m e that she woul dn’t go out with m e agai n unless I stopped! I al so noti ced that I becam e breathless quickly, and that I wasn’t enjoying sport as m uch. When I was taken of the school footbal team because I was unfit, I knew i t was tim e to qui t sm oki ng. I am sendi ng you som e advice I found on the Inter. It mi ght help you to stop and strengthen your resol ve. I do hope so because I want you to l ive as long and heal thy a li fe as I have. Love from Grandad H ow can you stop smoking? It i s not easy to stop sm oki ng, but mil li ons have managed to qui t and so can you. H ere are a few suggesti ons. Prepare yourself. Deci de on a day to quit. Don’t choose a day that you know i s goi ng to be stresful , such as the day of an exam. Make a l ist of al l the benefits you wil l get from stoping sm oki ng. Then throw away your last packet of ci garettes. Be determ i ned. Every tim e you feel li ke smoki ng a ci garete, rem ind yoursel f that you are a nonsm oker. Reread the li st of benefi ts you wrote earli er. Break the habit. Instead of smoking a cigarette, do som ething else. Go for a wal k, cl ean your teth, dri nk some water, cl ean the house。 i n fact, do anythi ng to keep your m ind and especi al y your hands busy. Rel ax.
