Problems of English Vocabulary Teaching of High School As we all know, vocabulary is one of the important aspects in language teaching and learning. In recent years, as for the English vocabulary teaching, the students really have got many achievements in this field. But there are still a lot of problems which keep the teachers and the students on the bay. First, as teachers always teach words in isolation, students cannot use them properly in practice. In the whole process of vocabulary teaching, a lot of teachers only instruct the pronunciation, part of speech and meaning of words and pay little attention to the context in which words are used. They just aim to enlarge the students‟ range of vocabulary, neglecting the students‟ receptive petence. Second, high school language teachers devote themselves to the improvement of vocabulary quantity. They try their best to help the students enlarge their vocabulary. Both the teachers and the students believe that the size of vocabulary is just vocabulary acquisition. The students don‟t know how to use the vocabularies correctly. They just know nothing but the basic meaning of the vocabulary. Third, teachers only teach knowledge, and do not teach vocabulary learning strategies. Teachers rarely guide the students to apply some vocabulary learning strategies. Students tend to get the vocabulary learning strategies through their own learning experience. For that reason, students‟ vocabulary learning is inefficient. Last, vocabulary teaching is detached from culture, and lacks practice. Importance of Conceptual Metaphor to English Vocabulary Teaching Metaphor in one form or another is absolutely fundamental to the way language systems develop over time. The meaning of vocabulary is indispensably related with its conceptual function. Limited amount of vocabulary was adopted by people to express the limited words within their touch, but with the development of the human society and their ideation ability, they were confronted with an increasing larger range of new thing.
