r fi rst acti vity of the day. Thi s m eans goi ng back to the pl ace where we l eft the fami ly sl eepi ng i n a tree the ni ght before. Everybody si ts and wai ts i n the shade of the trees whi l e the fam il y begi ns to wake up and m ove off. Then we fol l ow as they wonder i nto the of the tim e, chim ps either feed or cl ean each other as a way of showing l ove i n thei r fami ly. Jane worns us that our grou i s goi ng tobe very ti red and di rty by the afternoon and she i s ri ght. However, the eveni ng m akes it al l worthwhi l e. We watch the m other chim pand her babi es pl ay i n the tree. Then we see them go to sl eep together in thei r nest for the ni reali ze that the bond between m em bers of a chim p fami l y i s as strong as i n a hum an fam il y. N obody before Jane ful y understood chi m p behavi our. She spent years observi ng and recordi ng thei r dail y activi ti es. Si nce her chi l dhood she had wanted to work wi th anim al s i n thei r own envi ronm ent. However, thi s was not easy. When she first arri ved i n Gom be i n 1960, i t was unusual for a wom an to li ve i n a forest. Onl y after her m other cam e to hel pher for the first few m onths was she al owed to begi n her er work changed the way peopl e thi nk of chi mps. For exam pl e,one im portant thi ng she di scovered was that chim ps hunt and eat m eat. Unti l then every thought chim ps onl y eat frui t and nuts. She al so discovered how chim ps muni cate wi th each other, and her study of thei r body l anguage hel ped her work out their soci al system . For forty years Jane Goodal has benoutspoken about m aki ng the rest of the worl d understand and respect the li fe of these anim al s. She has argued that anim al s shoul d be l eft i n the wil d and not used for entertai nm ent or adverti sem ents. She has hel ped to set up special pl aces where the can l i ve safel y. She i s l eadi ng a busy l i fe but she says: “O nce I stop,i t al es crowdi ng i n and I rem em ber the chim ps i n l aboratories. It’s teri bl affacts m e when I watch the wi l d chim ps. I say to m ysel f,’Aren’t they l ucky?’And then I thi nk about sm al chim ps i n cages though they have done nothi ng you have seen that you can never fet…“ She has achieved everything she wanted to do:working with anim al s in their own environment, gaining a doctor‟s degree and showi ng that wom en can li ve i n the forest as men can. She i nspi res those who want to cheer the achievem ents of wom en. WH Y NOT CARRY ON H ER WORK? I enjyed Engli sh , biol ogy, and chem istry at school , but which one shoul d I choose to study at uni versity ?i di d not know the answer until one eveni ng when I sat down at the puter to do some research on great women of Chi na. By chance I came across an articl e about a doctor cal l ed Lin Qiaozhi, a specalist in wom en‟s diseases. She lived from 1901 to 1983 .It seem ed that she had been very busy in her chosen carer , travli ng abored to study as wel as writi ng books and arti cl es. O ne of them caught m y eye. It was a sm al bok expl ai ni ng how to keepi ng babi es cl ean, heal thy and free from si ckness. Why di d she wri te that?Who were the wom en that Lin Qi aozhi thought needed thi s advice?I l ooked careful y at the text and reali ze that i t was i ntended for wom en i n the countrysi de. Perhaps i f they had an em ergency they coul d not reach a doctor. Suddenl y it hit m e how difficul t it was for a wom an to get medical training ata that tim e. That was a generation when girl s‟ education was al ways pl acred decond to boys‟. Was she so much cl everer than anyone el se?Further reading m ade m e real ize that it was hard work and determ ination as wel l as her gentl e nature that got her i nto m edi cal school .What m ade her succeed l ater on was the ki ndnes and consi derati on she showed to al her pati ens. There was story after story of how Lin Qiaozhi, tired after a day‟s work, went l ate at night to deliver a baby for a pool famil y who coul d not pay her. By now I coul d not wait to fi nd out m ore about her . I discovered that Li n Qiaozhi had devoted her whol e li fe to herpati ens and had chosen not to have a fami l y of her own. Instead she m ade sure that about 50, 000 babi es were safel y deli vered. By thi s ti m e I was very exci ted. Why not study at m edical col l ege li ke Li n Qi aozhi and carry on her good work?It was stil l not too l ate for m e to im prove m y studi es, prepare for the uni versity entrance exam inations , and … ELIZABETH FRY When the Quaker El i zabeth m ari ed Joseph Fry, i t seem ed as i f her li fe woul d be fortable and owever, Eli zabeth was not content wi th her easy l i fe and her growi ng fami ly. She saw m any poor peopl e li ving near her and she wanted to hel p them. O ne day she was asked to visi t a pri son . At fi rst the pri son offi cers did not want to l et her vi sit the wom en pri soners because they feared the pri soners woul d attack her, but El i zabeth was not afrai d. She reali zed that the prisoners behave badl l y because they were treated li ke anim al s. They had no beds, cl ean cl othes, food or heati ng. Any chi l d born in pri son had to stay there and had no chance of an education. Thi s m eant they woul d probabl y have to beg or steal when they grew up and then woul d return to pri son. So the fi rst thi ng Eli zabeth di d was to provi de food, cl ean cl othes and straw for beds. Later she began a pri son school for the chil dren and taught the wom en to sew, knit and m ake goods to sel. In thi s way they abl e to make a l i ttl e m oney for themsel ves and gai n som e sel er li ndnesshel ped her gai n the fri endshi pof pri soners and they began to try to im prove their condi ti ons for them sel ves. Later Eli zabeth was asked to go to the l eaders of Bri tai n to di scus how to im prove the condi ti ons for prisoners。 O f course she di d not do al the work on her own.。
