For example, a country’s territorial claim to a particular land area may depend on maintaining a certain size population in the region. Achieving selfsufficiency in food production may be a strategic goal of a country and to do that, helping agricultural regions may be necessary. One of the other concerns that has emerged more recently is whether environment also affects the tradeoff between efficiency and equity and/or introduces another set of tradeoffs between efficiency and environment and equity and environment. With respect to environment, when we are talking about regional considerations, there are several ways in which the environment and regional equity may be plementary. Some of these include: Relieving congestion in centre areas Allowing for savings in certain services Helping to reduce urbanization On the other hand, regional development may lead to more rapid depletion of resources, or more deforestation, or more intensive farming or more pollution from industrialization. So the real question is whether regional development can be achieved in a sustainable way, where sustainability enpasses environmental considerations.
