Although, the human being is inferior to the nature, the old man prove himself a man who can be destroyed, but not be defeated. He knows the human beings are strong to fight against them. The skeleton of the marlin stands for the spiritual victory of the old man. it is the symbol of daring to face the failure and the death. The old man kills the marlin with two days, on his way home, many sharks attack his fish. To protect his fish, he has a crazy struggle with the sharks. In the end, although the marlin was eaten up by the sharks, it means a sense of success for the old man, which is a spiritual victory. This kind of victory symbolizes his unchangeable willpower and the courage to face the death. All of the other fishermen in the story are the people who want the new equipment and want to do away with the old days of living.
