the puter had started working agai n. We reali zed that we had di scovered som ethi ng new about “bl ack hol e”. If you go i nsi de the edge of a “bl ack hol e”, i t wil l “eat” you and there i s no escape。 but if you do not, you m ay have an oportuni ty to escape. H ow exciti ng! Unit 5 A tri p on “ The True North” Li Dai yu and her cousi n Li u Qian were on a tri p to Canada to bi si t thei r cousins i n Montreal on the Atl anti c coast. Rather than take the aeropl ane al the way, they deci ded to fly to Vancouver and then take the trai n west to east across Canada. The though that they coul d cross the whol e conti nent was exci ti ng. Thei r fri end, Danny Li n, was wai ti ng at the airport. H e was goi ng to take them and thei r baggage to catch “The True N orth”, the cross Canada trai n. On the way to the stati i on, he chatted about their tri p. “You’re goi ng to see som e great scenery. Goi ng eastward, you’l l pass mountains and thousands of lakes and forests, as wel as wi de rivers and large cities. Some peopl e have the i dea that you can cross Canda in less than fi ce days, but they fet the fact that Canada is 5500 ki lometers from coast to coast. Here in Vancouver, you’re i n Canada’s warmest part. Peopl e say it is Canada’s most beauti ful ci ty, surrounded by mountai ns and the Paci fi c O cean. Ski ng i n the Rocky Mountains and sai li ng i n the harbour make Vancouver one of Canada’s most popular ci ti es to l ive i n. Its popul ati on i s increasi ng rapidl y. The coast north of Vancouver has some of the oldest and m ost beauti ful forests in the worl d. It is so wet there that the trees are extrem el y tal , som e measuring over 90 metres. ” That afternoon aboard the train, the cousins settled down in thei r seats. Earli er that day, when they crossed the Rocky Mountains, they managed to catch sight of som e mountain goats and even a gri zzly bear and an eagle. Their next stop was Calgary, which i s famous for the Cal gary Stampede. Cowboys from al over the world e to pete i n the Stampede. Many of them have a gift for ri ding wi ld horses and can win thousands of dol lars in pri zes. After two days’ travel , the girls began to realize that Canada is qui te empty. At school , they had learned that most Canadians l ive within a few hundred ki lometres of the USA border, and Canada’s population i s only sli ghtl y over thirty mi l ion, but now they were amazed to see such an empty country. They went through a wheatgrowi ng provi nce and saw farms that covered thousands of acres. Afrer dinner, they were back in an urban area, the busy port ci ty of Thunder Bay at the top of the Great Lakes. Because of the Great Lakes, they learned, Canada has more fresh water than any other country i n the world. In fact, it has onethird of the world’s total fresh water, and much of i t is in the Great Lakes. That ni ght as they slept, the trai n rushed across the top of Lake Superior, through the great forests and southward towads Toronto. “The True North” from Toronto to Montreal The next m orni ng the bushes and mapl e trees outsi de their wi ndow were red, gol d and orange, and there was frost on the ground, confi rming that fal l had arri ved i n Canada. Around noon they arrived in Toronto, the biggest and most weal thy city i n Canada. They were not l eavi ng for Montreal until l ater, so they went on a tour of the ci ty. They went up the tal CN Tower and looked acros the lake. In the di stance, they coul d see the Mi sty cl oud that rose from the great N i agara Fal ls, which is on the south si de of the lake. The water fl ows into the Niagara Ri ver and over the fals on its way to the sea. They saw the covered stadium, home of several famous basketbal l teams. As they walked north from the harbour area, Li Daiyu said, “Lin Fang, one of my m other’s old schoolm ates, li ves here. I shoul d phone her from a telephone booth.” They met Lin Fei around dusk in downtown Chi natown, one of the three in Toronto. Over dinner at a restaurant cal led The Pink Pearl , the cousi ns chatted wi th Li n Fei, who had moved to Canada many years earl ier. “We can get good Cantonese food here,” Li n Fei tol d them, “ because most of the Chinese people here e from South China, especi al ly Hong Kong. It’s too bad you can’t go as far as Ottawa, Canada’s capi tal. It’s approximately four hundred ki lometers northeast of Toronto, so i t woul d take too long.” The trai n l eft late that night and ari ved in Montreal 山东菏泽玉皇化工有限公司 6 万吨 /年苯加氢制 环己烷 项目 可行性研究报告 常州化工 设计院 有限公司 二零一零年 四 月 a chance to m ake a trip into space with my fri end Li Yanpi ng, an astronomer. We vi sited the moon in our spaceship! Before we leave, Li Yanpi ng explained to me that the forece of the gravity woul d change three tim es on our journey and that the first change would be the most powerful. Then we were off. As the rocket rose into the air, we were pushed back into our seats because we were trying to escape the pul l of the earth’s gravi ty. It was so hard that we coul d not say anythi ng to each other. Gradual ly the weight l esened and I was abl e to talk to him . “ Why is the spaceship not fal li ng back to the earth? On the earth if I fal from a tree I wi l fal to ground.” I asked. “ We are too far from the earth now to feel its pul l, “ he expl ained, “ so we feel as i f there i s no gravi ty at al l. When we get cl oser to the moon, we shal l feel i ts gravity pul li ng us, but it wil l not be as strong a pul as the earth’s. “ I cheered up im mediately and floated wei ghtl essl y around in our spaceship cabi n watching the earth bee smal er and the m on larger. When we got there, I wanted to explore i mmedi atel y. “ Com e on,” I said. “ If you are ri ght, m y mass wi l be less than on the earth because the moon is smal ler and I wi l be abl e to m ove more freely. I m ight even grow tal e。
