So m any of them sadl y went hom e, but others stayed to run the race. There was a m an cal ed Hi ppom enes who was am azed when he heard of Atl anta’s rul es, ― Why are these m en so fooli sh?‖ hethought. ― Why wil l they l et themsel ves be kil l ed because they canot run as fast as thi s pri ncess?‖ H owever, when he saw Atl anta e out of her house to run, Hi ppom enes changed hi s m ind. ― I wi l m arry Atl anta—or di e !― he sai d. The race started and although the m an ran very fast, Atl anta ran faster. As H i ppom enes watched he thought, ― How can I run as fast as Atl anta?‖ H e went to ask the Greek Goddess of Love for hel p. She promi sed to hel p him and gave him three gol den appl es. She sai d, ― Throw an apple i n front of Atl anta when she i s runni ng past. When she stops to pi ck i t up, you wi l be able to run past her and wi n. ‖ Hi ppom enes took the appl es and went to the Ki ng. H e sai d, ― I want to m arry Atlanta. ‖ The King was sad to see another m an di e, but H i ppom enes sai d, ― I wil l m arry her – or die!‖ So the race began. In 2020 a Canadi an ski er, Sara Renner, was taki ng part i n the croscountry fi nal when her left pol e broke. Thi s was a seri ous probl em as she needed the pol e to help her travel qui ckly through the deep snow. Imm edi atel y Bjornar Hakensm oen , the coach of the N orwegi an team , gave her another pol e. So Renner was abl e to get a si l ver m edal . Hakensm oen sai d that he had onl y behaved as any good sportsm an shoul d, but Sara sai d that H akensm oen had shown everybody the true m eani ng of sport. 2. The Special Ol ym pi c athl ete For athlete Eri c Wi l i am s gol d m edals are ni ce, but good sportsmanshi p i s m ore im portant. Eri c has a l ow m ental abil ity but thi s does not stop him from taki ng apart i n the O l ym pi cs. In 2020 Eri c peted i n runni ng races and the l ong jum p. H e sai d, ― I’ ve been peti ng i n the Speci al O lym pi cs ever si nce I was at hi gh school. It’s real l y a good experi ence. You get to m eet di fferent athl etes and vol unteers and m ake al ki nds of friends. ― John Corbett, an ani zer of the Speci al Ol ym pics sai d, ― H e al ways does his best and has a wonderful tim e i n the progress. The stubborn African In 1968 a Kenyan athlete Ki p Kei no peted in the 1500 m etres runni ng race. At that tim e he was very i l and i n great pai n. Al though he had reached the standard for the fi nal of the race he deci ded at fi rst not to take part. H owever, just before the race was goi ng to start he changed his m i nd. H e ran from hi s room and arrived at the race track a few mi nutes before the race was about to begi n. Surpri singl y, he won the race, fi nishi ng wel ahead of everyone else and showi ng what true courage and perseverance can achi eve. It was no wonder that Ki p Kei no becam e the onl y Kenyan sportsm an ever to appear on the cover of the worl d fam ous sports m agazi ne Sports il l ustrated. Unit 3 WHO AM I?
