i m ps waki ng up i s our fi rst activi ty of the day. Thi s m eans going back to the place where we l eft the fam il y sleepi ng i n a tree the night before. Everybody si ts and wai ts i n the shade of the trees whil e the fami l y begi ns to wake up and m ove off. Then we fol ow as they wonder i nto the forest. Most of the tim e, chim ps ei ther feed or clean each other as a way of showi ng love i n their fami l y. Jane worns us that our grou i s goi ng tobe very ti red and dirty by the afternoon and she i s owever, the eveni ng m akes i t al worthwhi le. We watch the m other chim pand her babi es pl ay in the tre. Then we see them go to sl eep together i n thei r nest for the ni ght. We real i ze that the bond between m em bers of a chi m p fam il y i s as strong as i n a hum an fam il y. N obody before Jane ful ly understood chi m p behavi our. She spent years observi ng and recordi ng thei r dail y acti viti es. Si nce her chi l dhod she had wanted to work wi th anim al s i n thei r own envi ronm owever, thi s was not easy. When she fi rst arri ved i n Gom be i n 1960,i t was unusual for a wom an to l i ve i n a forest. O nl y after her mother cam e to hel pher for the fi rst few m onths was she al owed to begi n her er work changed the way peopl e thi nk of chim ps. For exampl e, one im portant thi ng she discovered was that chi m ps hunt and eat m eat. Until then every thought chi mps onl y eat frui t and nuts. She al so di scovered how chim ps m uni cate with each other, and her study of thei r body l anguage hel ped her work out their soci al system . For forty years Jane Goodal l has beenoutspoken about m aki ng the rest of the worl d understand and respect the l i fe of these ani mal s. She has argued that anim al s shoul d be l eft i n the wi l d and not used for entertai nm ent or adverti sem ents. She has hel ped to set up special pl aces where the can li ve safel y. She i s l eadi ng a busy l i fe but she says: “Once I stop, it al l es crowdi ng i n and I rem em ber the chim ps i n l aboratori es. It’s terri bl e. It affacts m e when I watch the wil d chim say to m yself,’Aren’t they l ucky?’And then I thi nk about sm al l chim ps in cages though they have done nothi ng you have seen that you can never fet…“ She has achi eved everythi ng she wanted to do: worki ng wi th animals in their own environment, gaining a doctor‟s degree and showing that women can live in the forest as men can. She inspi res those who want to cheer the achi evem ents of wom en. WH Y NOT CARRY ON H ER WORK? I enjyed Engli sh , biol ogy, and chem i stry at school , but which one shoul d I chose to study at uni versi ty ?i di d not know the answer unti l one eveni ng when I sat down at the puter to do some research on great wom en of Chi na. By chance I cam e across an arti cl e about a doctor cal l ed Li n Qi aozhi , a specalist in women‟s diseases. She lived from 1901 to 1983 . It seemed that she had been very busy in her chosen career ,travli ng abored to study as wel as wri ti ng boks and arti cl ne of them caught m y eye. It was a sm al book expl ai ni ng how to keepi ng babi es cl ean, heal thy and free from sickness. Why di d she write that?Who were the wom en that Li n Qi aozhi thought needed thi s advi ce?I l ooked careful y at the text and reali ze that i t was i ntended for wom en i n the countryside. Perhaps i f they had an em ergency they coul d not reach a doctor. Suddenly it hit me how difficult it was for a woman to get medical training ata that time. That was a generation when girls‟ education was always placred decond to boys‟. Was she so much cleverer than anyone else?Further readi ng m ade m e reali ze that it was hard work and determ i nati on as wel as her gentl e nature that got her i nto m edi cal school .What m ade her suceed l ater on was the ki ndnes and consi derati on she showed to al her pati ens. There was story after story of how Lin Qiaozhi, tired after a day‟s work, went late at night to deliver a baby for a pool family who could not pay her. By now I coul d not wai t to fi nd out m ore about her . I di scovered that Li n Qi aozhi had devoted her whol e li fe to herpati ens and had chosen not to have a fam il y of her own. Instead she m ade sure that about 50, 000 babies were safel y deli vered. By this tim e I was very not study at m edi cal col l ege l i ke Li n Qi aozhi and carry on her good work?It was stil l not too l ate for m e to im prove my studies, prepare for the university entrance examinations , and … ELIZABETH FRY When the Quaker Eli zabeth m arri ed Joseph Fry,i t seem ed as i f her l i fe woul d be fortabl e and peaceful .H owever, El i zabeth was not content wi th her easy li fe and her growi ng fam il y. She saw m any por peopl e li vi ng near her and she wanted to hel p them. O ne day she was asked to vi sit a pri son . At first the pri son ofi cers di d not want to l et her vi si t the wom en pri soners because they feared the pri soners woul d attack her, but El i zabeth was not afrai d. She reali zed that the pri soners behave badl y because they were treated l i ke ani mal s. They had no beds, cl ean cl othes, food or heati ng. Any chil d born i n prison had to stay there and had no chance of an educati on. Thi s m eant they woul d probabl y have to beg or steal when they grew up and then woul d return to pri son. So the fi rst thi ng El izabeth di d was to provi de food, cl ean cl othes and straw for beds. Later she began a pri son school for the chil dren and taught the wom en to sew, kni t and m ake goods to sel . In thi s way they abl e to m ake a li ttl e m oney for them sel ves and gai n som e er li ndnesshelped her gai n the fri endshi pof pri soners and they began to try to im prove thei r condi ti ons for them selves. Later Eli zabeth was asked to go to the l eaders of Bri tai n to di scuss how to i m prove the condi ti ons for pri soners。 Of course she di d not do al l the work on。
