I wanted to mm et robots from other countyi es and expl ore i des about our ower ,m y programm er fel l il l the week before we were goi ng to l eave . It was very pai nful for her and I fel t very fri ghtened. I no l onger fel t so confi dent that I woul d wi n. The day of the peti ti on was rather coul d for m y l egs and my speci al oil began to fteeze. I paused before I jum ped from the starti ng pl ace on a l ittle spaceship but then I began m y performance. At the corect m om ent I tri ed to open m y parachute but there was a probl em . It onl y opened a l i tl e .In stead of fl ying softly to earth I began to fal faster and faster so that I coul d not turn , di ve,ci rcl e or dance. My heart stopped beati ng as I l anded heavi ly on a m ountai n covered wi th snow. Thi s i s why I am wri ti ng to you from m y hospi tal bed with two broken legs and a fragil e head. I di d not wi n anythi ng at the Ol ympi c after al l. I need the factory to build me two new legs and an even bigger head. Then I will be able to pete once more . Let’s hope foe greater success in the next Ol ympi cs! Uni t 4 (1) How Daisy l earned to hel p wil dli fe Dai sy had al ways longed to hel p endangered speci es of wil dli fe. O ne day she woke up and found a fl yi ng carpet by her bed.“Where do you want to go?”it asked. Daiasy responded immediately.“I’d like to see some endangered wildlife,”she said.“please take me to a distant land where I can fi nd the anim al that gave fur to m ake this sweater. ”At once the carpet flew away and took her to Tibet. There Daisy saw an antelope looking sad. It said,“We are being kil ed for the wool beneath our stom achs. Our fur i s bei ng used to make sweaters for peopl e l ike you . As a reasul t, we are now an endangered species.”At that Daisy cried,“I’m sorry I didn’t know that. I wonder what is being done to help you. Flying carpet,please show me a place where there’s some wildlife protection.” The fl yi ng carpet travel ed so fast that next mi nute they were i n Zimbabwe. Daisy turned around and found that she was being watched by an elephant. “H ave you e to take my photo?”it asked. In relief Daisy burst into laughter.“Don’t laugh,”said the elephant,“We used to be an endangered species. Farmers hunted us without m ercy. They sai d we destroyed their farms, and m oney from touri sts onl y went to the l arge tour pani es. So the governm ent deci ded to hel p. They al owed tourists to hunt onl y a certai n num ber of anim al s i f they pai d the farm ow the farm ers are happy and our numbers are increasing. So good things are being done here to save local wildlife.” Daisy smiled. “That’s good shows the importance of wildlife protection,but I’d like to help as the WWF suggests.”The carpet Rose agai nst and alm ost at once they were in a thi ck rai nforest. A m onkey Watched them as it rubbed itself.“What are you doing?”asked Daisy. “I’m protecting myself from mosquitoes,”it replied. “When I fi nd a m il pede i nsect, I rub it over m y body. It contai ns a powerful drug whi ch affect m osqui toes. You shoul d pay more attenti on to the rai nforest where I li ve and appreci ate how the animals live together. No rainforest,no animals,no drugs. ” Daisy was amazed. “Flying carpet, pl ease take m e hom e so I can tel WWF and we can begi n produci ng this new drug. Monkey,please e and help,”The monkey agreed. The carpet flew home. As they landed,things begin to disappear. Two minutes l ater everythi ng had gone the m onkey,too. So Dai sy was not abl e to make her new drug. But what an experi ence!She had l earned so m uch!And there was always WWF …… (2)Anim al exti ncti on Many anim al s have di sapeared duri ng the l ong hi story of the earth. The m ost fam ous of these anim al s are di nosaurs. They l i ved on the earth tens m il li on of years ago, l ong before hum ans cam e i nto bei ng and thei r future seem ed secure at that tim e. There were m any di fferent ki nds of dinosaur and a num ber of them used to l i ve i n chi na. The eggs of twentyfi ve speci es have ben found i n Xi xi a County,N anyang,H enan provi ot l ong ago a rare new speci es of birdli ke di nosaur was di scovered i n Country,li aoning sci enti sts i nspected the bones, they were surpri sed to fi nd that these di nosaurs coul d not onl y run l i ke the others but al so cli m b trees. They learned this from the way the bones were joi ned together. Dinosaurs di ed out suddenly about 65m il li on years ago. Som e sci enti sts thi nk i t cam e after an unexpected i nci dent when a huge rock from space hi t the earth and put too m uch dust i nto the ai thers thi nk the earth got too hot for the di nosaurs to l i ve on any obody knows for sure why and how dinosaur disappeared from the earth i n such a short ti m e. We know m any other wi l d pl ants, anim al s,i nsects and bi rds have di ed out m ore recentl y. Accordi ng to a UN report , som e 844 ani m al s and pl ants have di sappeared i n the l ast 500 years. The dodo i s one of them. It li ved on the Isl and of Mauri ti us and was a very fri endly anim al. Pl ease li sten to a story of the dodo and how i t disappeared from the earth.
