Tam 【摘要】 Occupational health and safety (OHS) in the construction industry are of grave concern around the world. Some construction firms have implemented their own safety management systems attempting to improve construction safety。 however, the implementation of a new international standard: Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001 is not monly adopted in the industry. This paper examines the implementation of OHS management systems and the OHSAS 18001 in the construction industry. Questionnaire surveys and structured interviews were conducted. It is found that the OHS status in the construction industry is not satisfactory based on data of recorded accidents from construction activities over the past three years. With regard to the operation of the OHSAS 18001 standard, it is suggested to integrate it with the ISO 9001 quality management system to streamline the process. Although prehensive occupational health services were provided, the rates at which they were operated within an OSHMS were quite different between programs for technical or resource reasons. Geldart 【摘要】 This contribution opens with a review of the process of manufacturing, a glance at current trends in the industry, as well as ongoing occupational health and safety (OHS) issues facing the sector worldwide. The chapter next looks at anizations’ pliance and the influence of legislative bodies on safety outes. Mandated safety mittees were described as they currently function in the province of Ontario, Canada, as in many other jurisdictions. Research is mixed on the effectiveness of regulation, although the evidence suggests that it specifically addresses more of the technical aspects of worker safety. The contribution devotes considerable time to anizationlevel OHS practices used in manufacturing panies today (., risk prevention, work reanization, and health promotion). In doing so, it is appropriate to pare safety culture and climate – two separate but related concepts pertaining to workers’ perceptions of the attitudes and mitment of top management toward worker safety. The last section summarizes a newer approach toward achieving occupational safety that incorporates risk prevention into a broader management system. The final section also evaluates the impact on OHS of other modern anizational practices (., highperformance work systems and lean manufacturing).
