Unit 2 COME AND EAT HERE (1) Wang Peng sat i n hi s em pty restaurant feeli ng very frustrated. It had ben a very strange morni ng. Usual y he got up early and prepared his menu of barbecued m utton kebabs, roast pork, stirfried vegetabl es and fri ed ri ce. Then by lunchtime they would al be sol d. By now his restaurant ought to be ful of people. But not today! Why was that? What coul d have happened? H e thought of hi s muton, beef and bacon cooked in the hottest, finest oil . Hi s col a was sugary and cold, and his i ce cream was m ade of m il k, cream and deli ci ous frui t. “Nothing coul d be better,” he thought. Suddenl y he saw his friend Li Chang hurying by. “H el o, Lao Li,” he cal led, “Your usual ?” But Li Chang seemed not to hear. What was the m ater? Som ethi ng teribl e m ust have hapened i f Li Chang was not ing to eat i n hi s restaurant as he al ways di d. Wang Peng fol owed Li Chang i nto a new sm al l e saw a si gn i n the wi ndow. It was ful of peopl e. The hostes, a very thin lady cam e forward. “Wel e,” she said. “My name is Yong Hui. I’l l hel p you l ose weight and be fit in two weks i f you eat here every day. ” Then she gave a menu to Wang Peng. There were few choices of fod and dri nk on i t: just ri ce, raw vegetabl es served i n vi negar, frui t and water. Wang Peng was am azed at thi s and especial y at the pri ces. It cost more than a god meal i n hi s restaurant! H e coul d not beli eve hi s eyes. He threw down the m enu and hurri ed outsi de. O n his way home he thought about hi s own m enu. Di d it make peopl e fat? Perhaps he shoul d go to the li brary and fi nd out. H e could not have Yong H ui getti ng away wi th teli ng peopl e li es! H e had better do som e research! At the li brary Wang Peng was surprised to find that his restaurant served far to much fat and Yong Hui’s far to l ittl e. Even though her customers might get thin after eating Yong Hui’s food, they were not eating enough energygi vi ng fod to kep them fi t. They would bee tired very qui ckl y. Wang Peng fel t m ore hopeful as he drove back home. Perhaps wi th a di scount and a new sign he coul d win his customers back! So he wrote: Want to fel fi t and energeti c? Come and eat here! Discounts today! Our food gi ves you energy al day! The petition between the two restaurants was on! COME AND EAT H ERE (2) A week later, Wang Peng’s restaurant was nearl y ful and he felt happier. Perhaps he woul d be abl e to earn his l iving after al l and not have to close his restaurant.
